SWIFT/BIC
Last updated: March 20, 2026
Overview
Regardless of chosen delivery method (SWIFT or EFT) a SWIFT/BIC code may be required instead of a routing code. This requirement is dependent on the bank country and currency chosen for the recipient.
Generally, for all payments: SWIFT codes can be either 8 or 11 characters in length.
They're structured as follows: HKBCCATT### or HKBCCATTXXX
"HKBC" - The first four characters identify the particular institution or bank to which the transfer will be made
"CA" - The next two characters specify the country
"TT" - The following two identify the location - usually the city
"###/XXX" - The final three characters are usually numerical and indicate a particular branch or office. Three X's (XXX) references the head office.
If 8 characters is not accepted, add "XXX" to the end of the SWIFT. This will send the wire to the head office who can source the branch and deposit successfully.
PLEASE NOTE: Regardless of chosen Delivery Method (SWIFT or EFT) a Routing code may be required instead of a SWIFT/BIC. This requirement is dependent on the Bank Country and Currency chosen for the Recipient.
