SWIFT/BIC & Routing Code Overview

Regardless of chosen delivery method (SWIFT or EFT) a SWIFT/BIC code may be required instead of a routing code. This requirement is dependent on the bank country and currency chosen for the recipient.

Generally, for all payments: SWIFT codes can be either 8 or 11 characters in length.

They're structured as follows: HKBCCATT### or HKBCCATTXXX

  • "HKBC" - The first four characters identify the particular institution or bank to which the transfer will be made

  • "CA" - The next two characters specify the country

  • "TT" - The following two identify the location - usually the city

  • "###/XXX" - The final three characters are usually numerical and indicate a particular branch or office. Three X's (XXX) references the head office.
