Recalling a Wire
Last updated: July 2, 2026
What is a recall?
A recall is a request asking the recipient's bank to return funds that were already sent, usually because of an error such as a wrong amount, a duplicate payment, or incorrect recipient details. A recall only works if the recipient authorizes a debit from their account so their bank can send the money back. Recipient debit authorization (D/A) is the single biggest factor in whether a recall succeeds.
Use dual approval on recipients and payments to prevent the errors that most often lead to recalls.
Can PayRecs recall a payment?
We can submit a recall request on your behalf through our payment partner, but the success rate is low and it is never guaranteed. Once a wire has been sent it cannot be stopped or intercepted in transit. A recall is a request, not a reversal.
For a recall to succeed, all of the following must happen:
The funds have already posted to the recipient's account.
The recipient's bank receives and agrees to process the recall.
The recipient authorizes the debit (D/A) so their bank can return the funds.
Because a single recall can involve four to six parties across different countries, the process is slow and frequently unsuccessful.
What to expect
Timeline: recalls commonly take several business days to several weeks, and can run longer when a beneficiary bank is slow to respond.
Updates: we submit the request through our processor and relay status updates as we receive them. Expect long gaps while we wait on the beneficiary bank.
No guarantee: many recalls close with no recovery, most often because the recipient does not provide debit authorization or the beneficiary bank does not respond after repeated follow-ups.
Possible outcomes
Funds returned: the recipient authorizes the debit and the funds come back to your account.
Failed, no authorization: the recipient declines or does not provide debit authorization, so the funds cannot be pulled back.
No response: the beneficiary bank does not respond after repeated follow-ups and recall options are exhausted.
Cancelled: you ask us to stop the recall, for example after resolving directly with the recipient.
Faster alternative: contact the recipient directly
Because you already have a relationship with the recipient, reaching out to them directly is usually faster and more reliable than a formal recall. Ask them to return the funds by SWIFT wire. If the original payment was in USD, they can send it directly to your institution. For other currencies, give them your incoming wire instructions (Incoming Wires).
